This section provides a list of genealogy websites that we have found useful. Other than that, please note that these are independent third-party sites and we cannot vouch for their content in any way. This is only a short list, offered as a starting point. Following the provided links will reveal many other relevant sites.
We have tried to provide a brief quotation from each site to summarise its purpose. In preference we have used the HTML Meta 'description' field, otherwise we have taken something from the home page.
The list has a UK perpective
So in no particular order:
www.freebmd.org
'FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the
Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England
and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed
records.'
We have found this site very useful, although access can be a bit slow at busy times. New material is constantly being added, so it is worth revisiting every few months.
www.ellisisland.org
'Between 1892 and 1924 over 22 million passengers and members of ships'
crews came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. Now you can
research passenger records from ships that brought the Immigrants
-- even see the original manifests with Passengers' names.'
This is an impressive archive on a specific subject. Searching on someone from my family, I found her manifest entry quite easily. I now know not only when she arrived and what her destination address was, but I also have some basic details about her physical appearance.
www.1901census.nationalarchives.go.uk
'1901 Census of England and Wales Online. View 1.5 million original
1901 census documents of England and Wales online detailing 32 million
people: A unique source for your family's history from The National
Archives.'
The definitive site for the 1901 England and Wales census. The information is of obvious use in confirming information on relatives you may have known, who are no longer alive but were then, as well as on any one else who was alive in the UK on the census date in 1901. Some areas of the site are free access, others are pay-per-view.
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
'Welcome to The National Archives of the United Kingdom. Here you can
find out about our work, look at online exhibitions or order documents.
A thousand years of British and World history are at your fingertips
- enjoy your visit!'
www.gro.gov.uk
UK General Register Office
'These pages give you information about how to register a birth or
death in England and Wales, how to go about getting married, how to
obtain a birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a death
certificate, and how to use the services at the Family Records Centre.'
While you may or may not feel the cost of obtaining a certificate from the GRO is reasonable, when you have several to obtain, the total cost quickly mounts!
www.cwgc.org
'The Commonwealth War Graves Commission - the cemeteries,
work
memorials, horticulture, architecture and records of
CWGC and the commemoration
of members of the Commonwealth
Armed Forces who died in the First and Second World Wars.'
This site can help clarify the 'where and when' of war casualties.
www.1837online.com
'Family tree research online. Trace your family tree using births,
marriage and death indexes on 1837online.com. Order certificates
online. Records include England and Wales and British nationals
overseas - including WW1, WW2, Boer War, Marine, Army, Consular,
High Commission and Civil Aviation Authority.'
This commercial site provides a pay-per-view service that provides more comprehensive coverage than the free sites currently do. Although the cost per view is small, one little niggle is that searching on an imprecise timeframe can return results which, when viewed, do not show a useful result, merely where the searched for entry would have been if it existed.
www.cyndislist.com
'Cyndi's list of genealogy Sites on the internet.'
A huge collection of genealogy links.
www.genuki.org.uk
A 'genealogical information
service for the UK and Ireland, containing a large structured tree of
information.'
www.ffhs.org.uk
'An international organisation based in the UK which represents,
advises and supports over 220 family history societies and genealogical
organisations world-wide, with an aggregate Membership of over 100,000.'
Among many other things, this site provides a list of UK local genealogy societies.
While it must be understood that the above list will always be a small one, we are open to suggestions as to other links which might usefully be included.
